The listing endpoint is /v0/servers. Paginate it with limit=100, following metadata.nextCursor until it is absent — and pass version=latest, which is the whole trick (see the next note). Each record carries the server's name, plus optional remotes (hosted endpoints) and packages (things you install and run locally). Classifying each server by which of those two it declares is what produces the split below.
The run took 171 pages and returned 17,100 records, all with distinct names — rows equalling unique names is the check that the filter did what it claimed.
Two figures from the GitHub search API on the same date, for scale rather than for precision: 25,079 repositories carry the mcp-server topic and 64,099 carry mcp. Treat those as upper bounds on nothing in particular — topics are self-applied, and neither number is a count of working software.
